Are Certain Toenail Types More Prone to Fungus?

toenail types fungus HoustonToenail fungus can develop on any toenail and on anyone. However, there are certain individuals who are more likely to develop the different types of toenail fungus.

The toenail itself, regardless of the person, is made out of the same material. So one person is not going to have a significantly different toenail makeup than what someone else might have.

The immune system and how the person fights off infection really has more to do with the development than anything else.

Weak Immune System

People suffering from a weakened immune system are more likely to experience toenail fungus. The severity of the fungus can range from a slight discoloration to the toenail breaking apart.

People with a weakened immune system usually have:

-Issue due to cancer
-Certain medications
-HIV or AIDs
-Recently gone through a bone marrow transplant or organ transplant.

As the body is already weakened and attempting to fight off the other infections, it is not able to do this with the toenails.

While talking to a doctor is important, they might not have the ability to correct the issue. Nail medications may interfere with current medications for the health issue. Some topical solutions might help, but usually are not as effective.

Diabetes

If you suffer from diabetes, you are more likely to experience fungus on your toenails. You need to regularly stay on top of your blood sugar. Maintaining a healthy diet is very important and can help you avoid any sort of other medical conditions.

However, those who aren’t healthy are going to suffer from all sorts of additional health problems. Toenail fungus variations are just one of the many issues that can come up.

Steroid Use

Long term steroid use has all sorts of negative side effects on the human body. It essentially deteriorates the immune system, while attempting to build up muscle mass and strength.

Even steroids for medical use, if used extensively, can have extreme negative elements attached to it. Although usually not as bad as recreationally used steroids.

If you have recently started taking steroids, it is in your best interest to stop for current and future medical benefits.

Vascular Disease

Vascular disease affects your blood vessels, arteries, veins and other necessary elements that transfer good throughout your body. When a disease develops that is connected with the flow of your blood, your body is not going to heal as quickly. The more blood and oxygen your body receives after an injury or infection, the sooner your body is able to return to normal. Due to this, if you start to develop toe fungus, it is more of a challenge for your body to fight off the infection.

Treating the fungus with a topical cream is a possibility. Other times your doctor may be able to prescribe a medication. But make sure it does not interfere with the medication you are taking for the vascular disease.

There are all sorts of external medical conditions that can cause your body to not fight off external infections.
