How To Treat Your Kids’ Toenail Fungus

treating toenail fungus in childrenKid’s toenail fungus is a relatively common condition, which affects older children more often than younger children. Also referred to as onychomycosis, it’s a problem that typically can be treated at home.

Causes of nail fungus include:

  • Bad circulation
  • Going barefoot in a public pool
  • Wearing someone’s shoes who has the same problem
  • Excessive sweating

Nail fungus is very contagious. That being said, it’s important to start treating it as soon as you notice its existence. Here are a few ways to do so.

Soak Feet to Combat Kid’s Toenail Fungus

One of the hardest obstacles to overcome, when treating fungal infections in children, is the fact that they are wiggly and impatient. But, this method is probably one of the easiest to accomplish.

Mix equal parts of warm water and baking soda in a large container. If your child is younger, give him or her a book to look at or something else that will keep them occupied for 15 minutes.

If you notice a white stringy substance floating to the surface of the water, contact your child’s physician. This is a sign of a bacterial infection, which requires immediate treatment.

Use a Nail File to Eliminate Kid’s Toenail Fungus

If your child is ticklish, this method might pose a bit of a challenge. But, in cases of a mild  fungal condition, you can usually use a nail file to help eliminate it. It’s best to work with a disposable nail file, in order to prevent further infection.

File each affected nail as thin as you can. Never go as far as the nail bed. Doing so would be very painful. The next step is to gently clip the nail with a pair of clippers that have been soaked in rubbing alcohol, for sterilization purposes.

Using Over-the-Counter Products

Another option is to use an over-the-counter product. There are many to choose from. If you’re not certain on which one to use, ask your child’s physician for a recommendation.

One example is a topical nail lacquer, which is similar to a clear fingernail polish. Simply apply the product as directed and let it dry completely. Most products of this type recommend that you use it twice a day.
