Winter Foot Care Techniques

winter foot careIt’s never too early to start thinking about winter foot care, especially when you live in a colder climate. Mother Nature can be unforgiving, at times. Help to protect your feet from her wrath, by taking advantage of these tips. Your feet will love you for it!

Moisturize Frequently

Get in the habit of moisturizing your feet, on a nightly basis. Right before bed is generally best. This keeps your feet from itching and scaling.

Wear Quality Socks

Wearing quality socks, when it’s cold outside, helps to keep them warmer. This is essential for good circulation. Poor circulation can lead to a variety of unhealthy conditions of the foot.

Exercise Before Going Out

Partaking in a light exercise routine, before venturing out in cold weather, helps your overall circulation. Simply doing a few leg lifts or rotating your feet in a circular motion, for a few minutes, does the trick.

Use Mild Soap

Mild soap is gentler on the skin. So, you typically have less problems with flaking and itching. Another benefit of using mild soap is that it doesn’t leave any type of residue on your skin.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Feet have a tendency to stiffen up somewhat, in the winter, at least for many people. Wearing uncomfortable shoes only makes the issue worse. It also makes feet feel tired more quickly.

Soak Your Feet

Soaking your feet, after a hectic day, feels wonderful. Add Epsom salts, for an even greater benefit. It’s imperative that you dry your feet properly after each soaking session. If you don’t, you have a much greater chance of dealing with a fungal infection.

Drink Water

Drinking adequate amounts of water is essential, regardless of the season. Eight, 8-ounce glasses are recommended to keep the body properly hydrated from head to toe.

Take Walks

Cold weather causes many people to feel sleepier than usual. Take short walks, on a regular basis, to help combat the problem. This also improves the circulation in your feet. It’s a win-win situation and another important aspect of winter foot care.

Use Polish Sparingly

Frequent use of nail polish, increases the chance of fungal nail infection. Why? Polish traps fungal spores underneath. This makes it very difficult to eradicate them, even when your feet are extremely clean.
